Betty Goh
Betty Goh's photography is infused with a sense of mystery and imagination. Her
original and unconventional contemporary style often surprises and captivates her
audience with its unexpected perspectives.
Born and based in Singapore, Betty’s primary passion is abstract street photography.
She views the urban landscape through alternative lenses, transforming the ordinary
into extraordinary. Her work explores the beauty of everyday streets, capturing the
intricate details of layers, lines, spaces, reflections, shadows, and silhouettes.
Betty describes her photographs as introspective reflections of her subconscious.
Street photography has provided her with a space to express the complex emo7ons
of urban life—passion, loneliness, fear, tension, and dilemmas. These unspoken,
surreal emotions often emerge as hidden elements in her visual poetry.
Betty is the only Singaporean featured in Women Street Photographers, a
groundbreaking book curated by Gulnara Samoilova and published by Prestel
Publishing in March 2021. The book highlights 100 contemporary female street
photographers from around the world.
Her solo exhibitions, Subconscious, in Tokyo and Singapore were both highly
successful. Her photo series has also been displayed at Leica Singapore, Leica
Malaysia, and in Germany. Betty’s work has been showcased globally, including in
New York City, California, Italy, Scotland, Australia, Mexico, and India.
In addi7on to her exhibi7ons, Betty has delivered talks for Leica Singapore, Leica
Malaysia, the Australian Association of Street Photographers, the Mexico Street
Photo Festival, and 7SPACES in Germany. Notably, she was the only Asian
photographer at the inaugural Mexico Street Photo Festival and in Germany. Betty
will be an invited guest exhibitor and speaker at the upcoming Dublin Street Photo
Festival in May 2025.
All of Betty’s photos are shot unposed, with a single exposure, and with minimal or
no post-editing.

Artist statement
“Subconscious” captures the adrenaline and vibrancy of city life, juxtaposed with the
unspoken loneliness, tension, and dilemmas lurking beneath the surface. Through
her introspective street photography, Betty delves into her soul and subconscious,
presenting unposed and un-staged images taken in a single exposure with minimal to
no editing.
"Subconscious" delves into Betty's personal journey, shaped by her upbringing in the
heart of Singapore. Growing up amidst the vibrant pulse of the city, she has always
sensed the interplay between its light and dark sides—forces that intertwine in ways
that defy clear boundaries. In the dynamic, ever-changing urban landscape, these
contrasting elements exist side by side, creating a complex and oIen mysterious
rhythm that mirrors Betty's own experience of life, where moments of clarity and
obscurity coexist without distinct separation.
AIer being diagnosed with cancer in 2021, Betty found solace in a simple yet
profound ritual: walking the streets of her city almost every day. It was during these
quiet walks, amid the hum of life around her, that she began to notice the small,
often overlooked moments that others passed by. As she observed the world
through her lens, capturing fleeting details, a revelation slowly unfurled. She realized
that these images — of cracked pavements, forgoBen corners, or moments of
fleeting beauty — were not just snapshots of the world, but mirrors reflecting her
own journey, her own fragility, and her unspoken resilience.
