Dmytro Kupriyan

Dmytro Kupriyan was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1982.

Worked as a photojournalist at news agencies and later started to work on

the topic of tortures doing a photo project about violence in ukrainian police (project "TORTURED") and aftermath of it. Then he shift his camera to topic of violence in wide meaning of it making a projects about war in Ukraine(projects "Fragments of War", "Banality of Aggression" and "WHEN THE WAR IS OVER") and later as a conclusion he moved to the topic of dialog in society as a reconciliation making a video about necessaries of Dialog trying to show that the only way to solve the problems and misunderstanding in societies is the dialog in all meaning of it: verbal, sub-verbal, physical, etc. Also he is interesting in ukrainian historical shipping and sailing on the chaika (name of an old national Ukrainian boat) “SPAS”, built in 2007 by a group of national enthusiasts. He went on a lot of trips over Dnipro river and Black Sea and made a set of photographs about that. On the boat he served as sailor, boatswain, motorist and made a lot of wood works.

In 2015 he serve a year in army photographing during the Ukrainian-Russia

conflict in Donbass and made projects about it.

At 2022 he finished self long-term project about highest point in Ukraine

mountain Hoverla, also made a project HOME/Дім about human habitat and

project HOMO/Людина about self representation of human.

After the full scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine start to serve in Ukrainian

Army once again and made a projects about it.

Artist statement

In my artistic practice I work with personal experience and what I live

through and in a simple, minimalist and elegant way I try to show it through photography. In my projects I use images in which similarities describe the general, and common elements from image to image are combined into an overall picture. At the beginning I worked with the topic of aggression and cruelty in their narrow sense and for three years I made the project "TORTURED" (2012) about people been tortured in the Ukrainian police. Later, with the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2014, I shifted to the topic of violence in the wide sense of this phenomenon and made the projects “The Banality of Aggression” (2016) and “WHEN THE WAR ENDS” (2017) about human aggression and cruelty in resolving everyday disputes and conflicts, and the project “Fragments of War” (2016) about the war in Ukraine, with scanned shrapnel and fragments of shells with descriptions and stories, describing the circumstances in which I found them,

origin, place and people who were nearby. And later, in 2022, with the

beginning of the full-scale invasion of russia in Ukraine, I began to explore the topic of war in its existential meaning by directly participating in hostilities, gaining personal experience, which I expressed in the projects “The Art of War or Rules for Caring for a rifle” (2025); sculpture - the project "Retaken Land" (2024) and textiles - the project "Sackcloth" (2025). For me, working on such topics is a constant choice of means of expression: whether a documentary approach, which often leaves no space for interpretation for viewer, or a modern artistic approach, where you can add many layers for reading and interpretation, or a statistical list where repeated elements make up the overall impression and content. Thus, the image becomes a double-edged sword: on the one hand it is documented evidence, and on the other it is a visually framed conceptual contemporary artwork. Also, while working in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, I made a project called "Corner spirit" (2018), about the personal and intimate space of a human that lies behind the external attributes of religion, where God and Love are in their pure sense, and also, while traveling around Ukraine, I made the project "HOME" (2019) about the human environment, encouraging viewers to critically rethink their living space. And, as a rhyme to this project, I made a project about self-perception of human - the project "HOMO" (2020). And another direction of my artistic practice is a series of photographs about the highest point of Ukraine - Mount Hoverla, the project "36 Views of Mount Hoverla" (2022); a series of photographs of seascapes "Three Seas" (2019); a long-term project on the visual study of the architecture and development of my hometown city Kyiv - "Kyiv. Panoramas"
