Francesca Cugno

Francesca Cugno was born in Sicily in 1997. She graduated in Photography ISIAU, where she developed a strong focus on visual experimentation. Her work centers on exploring memory, both individual and collective, through images that narrate stories of transformation and roots tied to

the land, as well as the changes that occur over time, addressing themes of change, identity, and belonging. The artist also delves into the role of the image, considering it not just as a representation but as a sensory experience that allows for the exploration of the tangible and intangible dimensions of our perception, inviting the viewer to deeply reflect on the nature of reality. In 2023, she was selected as a Fresh Eyes Talent by Gup Magazine and as a Fotograf Talent by Fotograf magazine. Her projects have been exhibited on multiple occasions, including the 2024 Other Spaces exhibition held in Berlin and the 2023 Premio Raccont’arti exhibition. She also participated in the Polycopies event with her thesis, Cartografie Percettive, published by Corraini Edizioni in 2024.

Cartografie Percettive

Marie-Josè Mondzain describes the vitality of the images with the metaphor of the saxifrage, a plant that grows on stone and spreads quickly, modifying the territory; it is compared to the way in which images or imagining gestures impose themselves on our lives, perpetually questioning their essence. Starting from the conception of the image as an archaic element and archaeological find, this research leads me to undertake a visual journey into the representations of the world, between beliefs and concepts which not only identify an ontological past but which emerge in a peculiar way in the current world, leading me to reflect on the trace of the invisible and on the perception of the tangible. Today we realize that we still experience this ambiguity determined by the role that images have had over the centuries. They escape their figuration by making themselves hyper-visible,building their complexity over time. Contemporary man becomes the object of the device, it is no longer the idea of God or the conscience of a subject that manifests itself in the mythologized image, but rather a socio-technological mechanism.. Cartografie Percettive is an invitation to observe what the founding elements of our imagination are and what actions they impact. This path is a sensorial journey where the body continually goes towards the image, but the symbols that manifest the invisible do not eventually satisfy the tireless attempt to see what lies beyond its nature.
