Artist statement
Bologna can boast a past and a musical tradition, still alive and present today, comparable only to those of a
few other cities in Europe. For this reason the city was declared Creative City of Music by UNESCO. A
particular role in this panorama belongs to jazz. Today there are numerous musicians who experience jazz
as their music of choice, also allowing many young people to approach this musical genre which allows a
great possibility of improvisation and artistic expression for individuals, within a unique and perfectly
blended context . Ivano Adversi intends to highlight this close connection with his work, filming Bolognese
musicians in iconic and evocative places in the city. Places that represent the beating heart of Bologna, as is
the rhythm of jazz music. The result is not a simple series of portraits in different city spaces but, through
images of emotional impact, constitutes a sort of visual soundtrack for Bologna, which highlights the
presence of the artists within the Emilian capital and their creativity, showing the the life and architecture
of the city at the same time. The places that served as a backdrop for jazz musicians range from large
historic buildings to famous Bolognese museums. Some Bolognese jazz clubs also served as photographic
sets for the shots.
