Artist statement
Growing Album allows you to plant your “home” wherever you are - literally. Handmade paper embedded with seeds from my grandmother’s garden carries photographs from my homeland, Poland, along with old maps and archived clippings. The seeds correspond to the plants in the images, creating a tangible link to memory. I transform intangible memories into living photographic objects, open to decay, renewal, and dialogue with their surroundings. One memory of picking tomatoes in my grandmother’s garden became central: preserving the seeds with the image makes the memory portable and rooted in a new context. Planting the work creates a bridge between past and present, fostering connection to heritage, environment, and identity. This approach challenges permanence in photography, emphasizing growth, transformation, and the experiences of migration - how identity, like a seed, can be carried, nurtured, and flourish elsewhere.
