Libya, Feminine Presence, 2008-2011
Documentary photographer with a career as a journalist, I worked from 2008 to 2011 as a resident
in Tripoli, Libya, for a Libyan state-owned company engaged in diverse engineering and planning
activities. In addition to the company's specific needs, my core expertise was cultural heritage in all
its forms, primarily architecture from antiquity to the ongoing transformations taking place on a
daily basis. The goal was to create archives and publications, thus I was benefiting a considerable
freedom of movement.
Personally, I was fascinated by the human actors in this conservative Muslim world where the
representation of the human person is, in principle, forbidden. The public presence of women
remains limited to plain solar daylight, and the hijab is mandatory. Here I want to highlight the
presence of women of different origins in a few images.
