Leela Cyd

Leela Cyd is a photographer based in Santa Barbara,

California.

She is looking for the in-between moments, the details and the emotion of places,

people or things. When she’s not making pictures or in the studio she’s playing

with her two young children dreaming up their next adventure.

Leela’s client roster includes Toyota, Square, Bragg, Sonos, Campari, UGG, Hoka,

Willow, Bon Appetit, The Kitchn, Apartment Therapy and the NYTimes among

others.

Leela has also authored and photographed 4 of her own books, Food with Friends,

Tasting Hygge, Cooking Up Trouble and Styling for Instagram.

Cyd’s series about grocery store flowers attempts to make beauty from the

mundane. The irony that she lives in Santa Barbara, a landscape bursting with

natural beauty, and using solely what’s available at the neighborhood market —

grabbed in a hurry along with milk, eggs and bread for the children — is what it’s

about. It’s an unnatural, almost ugly version of beautiful that Leela is mining.

The language of flowers is one of time, glory and rot. The impermanence makes

them the ultimate studio buddy — always a reminder of the clock moving ever

forward … Leela’s interest in florals have gotten her in trouble in her commercial

photo pursuits ‘too bright, too unattainable!’ Clients have criticized and removed
